Our Wall Preparation Process
Surface Inspection
Before prep work begins, our painters inspect the walls and other surfaces included in the project. We look for nail holes, dents, cracks, damaged drywall, loose paint, rough patches, failing caulk, previous repairs, and other imperfections that may affect the finished appearance.
This allows us to determine how much preparation the surfaces actually need instead of applying the same process to every wall.
Protecting the Work Area
Before repairs, sanding, or painting begins, floors, furniture, fixtures, and surrounding areas are protected as needed.
Furniture may be moved away from the walls or toward the center of the room to provide access to the work area. Drop cloths, plastic sheeting, painter's tape, and other protection supplies are used where appropriate.
Wall Repair and Patching
Holes, dents, cracks, and damaged areas are repaired according to their condition.
Minor preparation may involve filling nail holes or repairing small dents. More involved surfaces may require drywall patching, joint compound, multiple applications, or additional repair work before the area can be properly sanded and painted.
Scraping and Sanding
Loose or failing material should not simply be painted over. Where necessary, loose paint and unstable material are scraped away.
Patched areas and rough surfaces are then sanded as needed to help create a smoother transition between the repair and the surrounding wall.
Caulking and Detail Preparation
Gaps around appropriate trim and other painted surfaces can affect the finished appearance of a room. Where needed, our painters can remove or address failing caulk and apply new caulking before painting.

Cleaning and Priming Where Needed
Dust and debris created during preparation are removed from the work area and surfaces as necessary.
Repaired areas or other problem surfaces may also require spot priming before finish paint is applied. Primer is used when the condition of the surface or repair calls for it rather than as an unnecessary step on every wall.
Final Surface Check
Before painting begins, the prepared surfaces are checked again. This gives our painters an opportunity to identify remaining rough areas or imperfections that should be addressed before applying the finish paint.
